Building Act 1984 s.76, 79, 80

If a building or structure is, because of its condition, liabile to cause damage to (or be a nuisance to) the amenities of the neighbourhood, then the local authority can require the owner:

  • to carry out the necessary repairs and / or restoration

  • to demolish the building or structure (or any part of it) and to remove all rubbish or other material resulting from this demolition

In certain circumstances, the local authority can look to serve an abatement notice where there may be an unreasonable delay. The local authority can then complete such works as they deem necessary to remedy the defective state and recover the "expenses reasonably incurred in so doing"
